Summary
Abstract:
This Level 3 (gridded) data set’s land surface parameters, surface soil moisture, land surface (skin) temperature, and vegetation water content, are derived from passive microwave remote sensing data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI), using the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM). There are two files per day, one day and one night, archived as two ... different products. This document is for the nighttime product. The data set covers the period from December 1997 to present, at a spatial resolution of 0.25 degree. The data are stored in netCDF format. The LPRM is based on a forward radiative transfer model to retrieve surface soil moisture and vegetation optical depth. The land surface temperature is derived separately from TMI's Ka-band (37 GHz). A unique feature of this method is that it can be applied at any microwave frequency, making it very suitable to exploit all the available passive microwave data from various satellites. Input data are from the TMI Brightness Temperatures (1B-11) product, nighttime passes, as processed using LPRM (i.e., LPRM/TMI/TRMM L2 product, GES_DISC_LPRM_TMI_SOILM2_V001).

Quality
ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: These data have been quality controlled through computer and manual edits at different times with different degrees of success. In general, the quality of the data has improved as more sophisticated computer edits have been implemented, especially since 1998. Data prior to 1982 were converted from existing files, then placed in the current format after undergoing only a ... gross value check. In November 1993 the entire historical period of record was processed, using Red Ezell's "Vahlidd" software. Another round of quality control in November 2000 on the DSI-3200 data set, using Charles Phillips' "rehab" software increased that data set's quality still more. This quality control removed or corrected badly formatted records, deleted duplicate records, resolved problems with records with duplicate ID PORTIONS, did data value range checks and standardized the formats for accumulation and "days with weather". DSI-3210 data received a new round of quality control in February 2006, using a variation of Charles Phillips' "rehab" software customized for DSI-3210. The quality control was similar to what was done for DSI-3200. Ingest quality control since 1998 is good. The data are subjected to internal consistency checks, compared against climatological limits, checked serially, and evaluated against surrounding stations. Quality control "flags" are appended to each element value to show how they fared during the edit procedures and to indicate what, if any, action was taken. The "days with weather" data type, found in these data sets, is fair to poor, depending on the station. It cannot be used with any measure of confidence. Principal climatological stations operating 24 hours a day are expected to be the most reliable source of "days with weather". Reporting of this element by cooperative observers is not a requirement and criteria for reporting are not definitive. Most stations do not record this information.
